Shoppers in Gateshead flocked to the new Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd (SATCoL) shop at 33 Jackson Street as it officially opened its doors on Thursday 19 November. Following the recent opening of its first boutique shop in Morpeth, the new shop in Gateshead is SATCoL’s 20th retail shop in the North East.
Blessed with lovely mild weather, the opening day was a huge success with crowds queuing in the early morning to be amongst the first to browse the shop’s wide selection of clothes, shoes and accessories and grab a bargain.
The Salvation Army’s Divisional Commander, Major Amaro Pereira, conducted a traditional blessing and ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10.30am and refreshments were provided to celebrate the occasion.
SATCoL’s area manager, Anthony Cummings, was delighted by the local response to the shop opening: “The opening went extremely well. The shop was absolutely packed from the word go with people just flooding in, which was great to see. We know the support for The Salvation Army’s cause is very strong across the North East, and it’s obviously no exception here in Gateshead.”
Anthony added: “We were pleased to receive several enquiries about volunteering as there are always lots of different jobs that need doing. If you think you can spare any time at all, from a few hours to a few days a week, please do get in touch – we’d love to hear from you. We are also always grateful to accept donations from the public, whether it’s clothes, shoes, accessories or homewares. The only things we ask are that the items are clean and in good condition, and that no electrical items are included as we cannot safety test them.”
