SATCoL’s TRUST accredited Winchester warehouse goes GREEN

SATCoL is the largest charity-owned textiles collector in the UK, with multiple clothing collection sites, including TRUST (Trader Recycling Universal Standard) accredited Winchester warehouse which at the backend of 2022 began a major transition toward sustainability, implementing energy-efficient systems across the site.
Fully electric air conditioning and heating systems were installed in the ceilings of the main reception, office, meeting room, and weighbridge area, providing a sustainable climate control solution. Next on the list - EV charging stations - the new charges were fitted on site, making EV use more efficient and convenient for all drives.
As winter approach, seven electric heaters were strategically installed in the busiest warehouse areas to create a comfortable work environment. Contractors worked through the night to ensure the heaters were ready for the staff members the next day, helping to take the edge off the freezing cold temperatures.
Another upgrade done at the Winchester warehouse included the decommissioning of the gas boiler and radiators, which were replaced with an electric heating system in the canteen, toilets and office areas, further reducing the site's carbon footprint.
The warehouse completed its transition by replacing LPG-powered forklifts with four new Heli electric forklift trucks.
After a year long wait, the team was excited to see the new forklifts in action, making a final farewell to the gas powered fleet.
Fast forward to today, the Winchester warehouse now runs on 100% electricity! This transition came with some significant differences:
- Now saving around £400 a week on gas usage.
- No pollution to the atmosphere.
- No dust inside the warehouse.
- Decrease in noise levels.
- Forklift drivers do no longer need to change gas bottles and lift 18kg outside in the bad weather.
Daniel Breeze, Winchester site Manager said "we are all very happy with the changes we have made to the warehouse and the environment, and hope to continue to do more green initiatives in the future".
