Salvation Army charity shops and centres go green for Great Big Green Week!

Hundreds of Salvation Army charity stores and centres will ‘go green’ as part of Great Big Green Week (GBGW) which is the UK’s largest celebration to tackle climate change and protect nature. GBGW is organised by The Climate Coalition and Salvation Army charity shops, donation centres and support centres operated by Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd (SATCoL) as well as some of The Salvation Army’s church-run shops, will be taking part in the awareness event between 9th and 14th June.

Majonne Frost, Head of Environment and Sustainability at SATCoL, has been leading the charity’s ‘upcycling’ theme and efforts for GBGW. Majonne said: “We are not waiting for change. SATCoL is creating change by encouraging people to shop second-hand and upcycle items. It’s an important part of our mission to care for creation and care for our planet.”

SATCoL has a whole host of educational and collaborative initiatives planned. One is the launch of a new upcycled denim range designed by Emmiline Child, Senior Lecturer in Fashion at University of Northampton, using 30kg of unwearable denim donated to Salvation Army clothing banks. This fits in with the overall campaign message of ‘Upcycle Together For Good’.

Salvation Army shops have been encouraged to create window displays to promote the message of upcycling and raise awareness in communities across the UK. Colleagues from SATCoL’s Processing Centres and Support Centre are rolling up their sleeves and improving planting to attract wildlife. SATCoL has also set an ambitious target to collect 1,000 responses for a Sustainable Fashion Survey.

Majonne said: “We avoided over 453,000 tonnes1 of carbon emissions last year – that’s the equivalent of taking 305,000 cars of the road! That’s hugely positive and through our survey we can better understand the impact customers’ buying habits has on the planet.”
